2026 - 2027 SEASON
evening at the talk house
by wallace shawn
A Regional Premiere
Directed by Undermain Producing Artistic Director Bruce DuBose
On the ten year anniversary of the opening of his play Midnight in a Clearing with Moon and Stars, Ted, now a television writer, reunites with the play’s various participants at the same establishment they used to gather post-performance all those years ago, The Talk House. There, as they catch up, we catch a glimpse of their lives now under an American Authoritarian regime where criticism and dissonance is suppressed, the murder of those perceived as potential threats has become popular entertainment and theatre has all but ceased to exist. With his trademark dry humor, poignant language and subtle characterization, Wallace Shawn, eases the audience into an awkward casualness only to drop them in a world complacent to the horrors executed by its inhabitants.

for the rest of our lives
by erin malone turner
A Professional Premiere
Directed by vicki washington
Does love last longer than a lifetime? Erin Malone Turner’s poetic exploration of love and relationship follows a young couple through multiple incarnations, from ancient times to present day. The love they share is reborn along with them as they encounter one another in life as well as in between lives. In our own lives we may meet our “soul mate” but there is no guarantee that we will get the happy-ever-after ending promised in storybook romances. But, perhaps if love can persist across lifetimes, then any happiness found in the end will follow us across millennia. A love story for many ages.

VEAL
by Jojo Jones
A Regional Premiere
Directed by Artistic Associate Christina Cranshaw
What if you were to become the Queen of North America? Would you be a benevolent ruler concerned with the affairs of state and the wellbeing of your subjects? In Jojo Jones’ bitter allegory, Chelsea, the Queen of North America is not. The state of her state is not as much a concern as it is an inconvenience. And when her former middle-school friend group requests an audience with her, her focus isn’t so much on their present needs as it is on the cruelties and humiliations she was once subjected to by them. As she guides them to reenact scenes from their time as classmates, the cruelty they inflicted upon her comes back to them in painfully embarrassing recollections. Beneath the comedy of this turnabout scenario lies a danger and darkness that is only made palatable through Jojo Jones’ wit and the absurdity of it all.

THE TWO-CHARACTER PLAY
(OUT CRY)
by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Stefan Novinski
Everything in his life is in his plays, and everything in his plays is in his life. —Elia Kazan
Brother and sister, Felice and Clare find themselves alone in a theatre during a tour or their play titled The Two-Character Play, a tour that seems to have gone on forever. The rest of the company has deserted them, leaving the siblings to perform alone. Tennessee Williams uses the convention of a play within a play, the siblings erasing the separation between their own lives with the lives of the characters they portray, to explore the precarious relationship between the artist and the art. As the two characters weave in and out of reality, improvising and rewriting their lines, the audience also eventually abandons them in the theatre. Williams draws from his own autobiographical details including his relationship with his real life, institutionalized sister Rose and his own issues with substance abuse.
